There was talk of dropping Undead and High Elves at teams though that wasn't popular amongst the players. Due to that a fourth Elf team was created instead.
Coach was just about perfect with this description ... its only slightly off.

The original intention of Jervis Johnson was to do the following:

1) Delete the Undead team and split it out into two new teams Necromatic and Khemri (that's why these two teams have very similar elements to the Undead team (especially the Necromantic).
2) Delete the High Elf team (which at the time was VERY similar to the Dark Elf team) and replace it with a new Elf team that was more tournament friendly and was just a reworked High Elf team.

The rosters for these 3 new teams were created and published. They were going forward. Then the online community had a collective fit about Undead and High Elf being deleted. And after a lot of online yelling and screaming Jervis decided to not delete the High Elf and Undead teams but at the same time decided not to delete these fairly close copies of those teams that the BBRC had created to replace them.

So you ended up with Undead and Necro which look very similar and High Elf and Elf which look very similar as a result. The BBRC has made some changes to the teams to try and widen the gaps between these rosters ... but they look a lot like clones because they were clones meant to fully replace the old rosters.

Now where am I correcting what Coach said if you missed it. When he says due to that a 4th Elf team was created instead ... the timing of that is off. The more correct statement is "the Undead and High Elf teams were not deleted as planned." Jervis made it very clear that the Necromantic and Elf teams were staying ... he let the Undead and High Elf rosters live because players said they felt they should. So its a splitting of hairs but an important one to understand that if push had come to shove Undead and High Elf would be gone ... so its not that the new teams were created instead ... its that two teams headed for deletion where given a stay of execution.
