Black Orc Starting Rosters Overview
One of the new teams added to Blood Bowl Second Season, they don’t have many different players to pick from but there are still some different starting options to consider. There are downsides to each option which makes it tricky to decide how you want to start and frustratingly some options are just 5k over the starting budget!

Max Strength Black Orcs
Quantity | Player / Item | Cost |
---|---|---|
5 | Goblin Bruiser Lineman | 225k |
6 | Black Orc | 540k |
1 | Trained Troll | 115k |
2 | Rerolls | 120k |
Total | 1000k |
I think this will be a popular choice for a lot of coaches. You get all seven of your ST4+ players from the get go. This gives a higher chance that the MVP will land on these slow to skill players and one less Goblin Bruiser on the pitch makes it easier to hide them from opponents. Having the Troll also enables you to have a Throw Team Mate scoring option.
Unfortunately you’re 5k short from being able to afford an Apothecary. You can squeeze in twelve total players giving you either a substitute option from injury or perhaps let you be a bit more frivolous when it comes to fouling. The downside here is only two rerolls for a team that doesn’t start with many traditionally strong skills.
Alternatively you might want to save the extra 45k from that twelfth player and guarantee you have the funds for an Apothecary after game one. Or stick that money into Dedicated Fans. Starting with all your expensive players means you’re only really saving up for the Apothecary and then more rerolls, unless you sustain an injury or death
No Troll + Apothecary Black Orcs
Quantity | Player / Item | Cost |
---|---|---|
5 | Goblin Bruiser Lineman | 225k |
6 | Black Orc | 540k |
3 | Rerolls | 180k |
1 | Apothecary | 50k |
Total | 995k |
This team gets you eleven players but fits in an Apothecary to give the Black Orcs some back up. They do have quite high armour and not having a Troll means not only an extra Goblin Bruiser on the pitch, but that it’s harder to keep them screened off from the opposition. Bruisers are a bit tougher than a normal Goblin and have a slightly better chance to stay on the pitch if they do face an injury roll.
Trolls are pretty unreliable players and not many teams are going to be stronger in the trenches. You’ve got a single obvious target which you can save up for (barring injuries) and how much will you really miss not having Throw Team Mate straight away?
Troll and 3 Rerolls Black Orcs
Quantity | Player / Item | Cost |
---|---|---|
5 | Goblin Bruiser Lineman | 225k |
5 | Black Orc | 450k |
1 | Trained Troll | 115k |
3 | Rerolls | 180k |
Total | 970k |
If you sacrifice starting with a Black Orc then you can fit in three rerolls and the Troll. The advantage here is that you maintain a more desirable number of starting rerolls and also the Throw Team mate option. Ideally you’d prefer to start with all the Black Orcs as they are slow to get skills and fitting the Troll in also means not starting with the Apothecary.
You’ve got 30k left over which you can spend on Dedicated Fans, or save towards either the Apothecary or the last Black Orc. Getting the Apothecary first offers protection for your existing players but delays getting that final slow to skill Black Orc.
Low Value Mass Goblin Roster
Quantity | Player / Item | Cost |
---|---|---|
7 | Goblin Bruiser Lineman | 315k |
3 | Black Orc | 270k |
1 | Trained Troll | 115k |
3 | Rerolls | 180k |
Total | 880k |
With access to half price bribes, if you have a love of fouling then you could opt to start with lots of Goblin Bruisers to keep your team value lower. The above is one way of doing it which should net you two free bribes from inducements against most teams. You could drop the Troll down to a Black Orc and an extra Goblin Bruiser for a round 900k team and have twelve starting players. Of course you could go all out and just have 11 Goblins and 3 rerolls for 675k base. You’ll then have even more in the way of inducement money to hire Chainsaw players along with getting cheap bribes. I think if you’re thinking of going down this route, then you would be better off just playing a standard Goblin team.
Black Orc Starting Rosters Summary
It’s hard to know which way to go here and I think you can make a case for all of them. I personally don’t like starting teams with only two rerolls and I would have a hard time giving up any Black Orcs. Based on that I’d lean towards starting without the Troll, they are unreliable, Throw Team Mate doesn’t have a great success rate. They can be just as slow if not slower to skill up than Black Orcs but their unreliability and limited skill access means they don’t increase their usefulness hugely anyway.
If you’d prefer to go max strength in order to have one less Goblin on the pitch then there is plenty of merit in that way too. There are more strong players for your MVP to fall on and you’ve got built in Rerolls from Dodge and Brawler on the players that benefit the most from them.
Will you be making a guide on what skills to get for this team? Also with the rework of how spp and skill development works does that impact how previously added teams will go about their development? I mostly play Khemri and Nurgle and was wondering how the new system affects these teams.
Hi Zach, this is something that will be added in due course. I hope to have the guides up before BB3 releases at the end of Feb. Overall though I don’t think the new development system has affected teams that much on the whole, other than perhaps taking random skills on linemen type players lets you get some skills on players that don’t generally get many SPP beyond the MVP. You can also save up for secondary (doubles) skills now, though that primarily helps Elf teams get Guard, other players I’d probably stick with primary skills for the lower team value and quicker skill generation.
I’m 50/50 on a choice of 2 rosters for a 1,050,000 league.
4 rr, 6 orc, 5 gob, troll, ff3
vs
swap the troll for more RR
Hi Marky, the Troll gives you more strength and also opens up the possibility for a one turn Throw Team Mate scoring attempt. I’m not sure you’ve got your numbers correct either, I would take the Max Strength roster option and add an extra Goblin as the extra 50k isn’t enough for another reroll. You then have a spare player to do some fouling with.
I must have been tired when I did those sums 🙂 I went with;
3RR,
1 troll,
6 black orcs,
4 gobbos.
..spent the rest on fans
I have found that any MNG black orc is BRUTAL if you don’t have enough inducement gold for a decent star & that grab has been more instrumental than brawler in all my wins so far.
the key thing I have noted tho is that it’s hard to stop the team folding when you lose more than 1 Blorc!
