BB2020 Nurgle Starting Rosters

Nurgle Starting Rosters Overview

Nurgle have had a mixture of positive and negative tweaks to your starting roster choices. The Bloaters (previously called Warriors) have gone up slightly in price. However both the Pestigors and the Rotter Linemen have had a price drop. The Rotters also became less agile which hurts the team at lower levels.

You still have the problem of a lack of the core starting skills (Block , Dodge, etc.) You have expensive rerolls which can make the team hard to play. The Pestigors have perhaps become even more important than before as they are your only average at best players. If you load up on them then you’re not going to be able to start all the expensive and slow to skill up Bloaters. The Bloaters are also great to have from the start due to having both Foul Appearance and Disturbing Presence.

The Rotters are basically just expendable tackle zones now and the lack of Regeneration, no access to a team Apothecary and the fact they have Decay means they have a limited lifespan. The change to the way injury rolls work has helped a bit but I would just look at them as cheap roster filler to let you afford the more expensive options.

If you’re playing Nurgle then there has to be a lot of appeal in taking all the strongest players who come with the Foul Appearance and Disturbing Presence skills. This roster is overall 10k cheaper than it was before which you can bank or get some Dedicated Fans. The glaring weakness which the single player who has anywhere near somewhat decent agility. Before the Rotters could also do some ball handling reasonably well but now the opposing team has one priority target to go after. If you lose the Pestigor then you’re probably going to struggle a fair amount. You also only have two rerolls which I don’t like at the best of times with average agility players handling the ball. As well as the potential low agility issue, this team is very slow.

This roster wasn’t affordable before but it looks like someone in the NAF players association did some player price analysis in favour of Nurgle teams. Dropping the Rotspawn from the start not only lets you afford another reroll but if you add that tiny amount that was left in the bank you can just about afford to get a second Pestigor. I think this is a more practical way to start the team whilst still also starting all four Bloaters. I would probably look at adding a third Pestigor before even considering adding a Rotspawn, though the Rotspawn does have it’s uses against both bashing and agile teams.

For the second time we can come up with a starting roster that wasn’t affordable before, those NAF employees sometimes appear to know what they are doing! As Pestigors are the main engine around which the rest of the team plays, having all four means you aren’t going to be as vulnerable to losing one compared to other options. You unfortunately have to drop down to three Bloaters to do so, but it also means you have one less player on the pitch without Regeneration.

You also have a clear purchasing path unless any injuries or deaths happen to your more important players. If that does happen you can make a judgement call as to which player to hire next. An alternative option if you want to get that the fourth Bloater as soon as possible, would be to drop one of the Pestigors back down to a Rotter and bank 45k.

The final option to perhaps consider is to really load up on rerolls. This is slightly less balanced but your players have no core skill for either ball handling or blocking either. Your rerolls are also some of the most expensive in the game and Nurgle are a team that can burn through rerolls, especially early on in their life.

This does leave you to ask the question if you are giving up too much to start with though. You’ve had to go without the full compliment of your Bloaters and you only have two of your important ball handling Pestigors. There is also the fact you have one or two more of essentially roster filling Rotters on the team. It might also be worth bearing in mind that you can get free Rotters due to the Plague Ridden skill.

Nurgle Starting Rosters Summary

In a pleasant surprise Nurgle have had a bit of a low level boost when it comes to starting rosters. I know that I struggled with the team early on when I took them in a league. The price changes have helped out nicely with the small tweaks giving you some previously unaffordable starting options to pick between.

With these changes I think I would go with the two Pestigor and three reroll team. You should be able to afford a third Pestigor if you can manage to score three touchdowns over the first two games, or if the teams over those two games bring along more than the bare minimum of fans. Just be careful about exposing the Pestigors too much and hopefully the Bloaters can cause enough bother and skill up sooner rather than later.

  1. Have you considered:

    1x Rotspawn,
    2x Bloaters,
    4x Pestigors,
    4x Rotters,

    2x Re-Rolls,

This leaves 50k spare, this could be used to save towards a Bloater, or if you’re a fairly confident player you can throw the money into dedicated fans, where you’d be likely to recoup sufficient money to hire a Bloater after game two and four.

    • Hi Ian, in the right environment this may be worth trying. In a typical shorter tabletop league it has some drawbacks. The Bloaters are slow to develop, having to save up to buy them means they are missing games in which they could have got some Star Player Points. I also don’t like starting with two rerolls, even more so on teams that lack the core starting skills.

Having had more leagues in the new rules since this article was originally written, having some Dedicated Fans to start with is more appealing. The Pestigors offer a lot of flexibility and facing other starting teams, having less strength is more tolerable when the opponents aren’t as developed.

      • Hi Coach,

I feel Nurgle are just one of those teams that really have problems full stop in shorter leagues.

Though taking your comments, the only option that allows 3x RR and 4x Bloaters cuts the Rotspawn, and with only 1 DF you’re going to be spending a vast number of games saving up, whilst losing the flexibility of the Pestigor who’s frankly always ST4 at the key points in time.
