Hello people,

I'm here to bring my Elf team to this board and maybe regale with stories of victories or perhaps defeats!

Frangible Lightning is a team of Pro Elves that are doing very well in a private league (Guildhall Blood Bowl League). The league started out with fresh teams, and we're currently in our 6th week, so I've not had too much chance to develop. Elves develop fast, though!

Edit: I'm adding in an image of my team here that will be kept up to date as changes happen.
Frangible_Lightning-1.png

Anyway, here's the current iteration of the team (4-1-0):

Blitzer - rookie MNG
Blitzer - +AG
Thrower - rookie
Catcher x3 - rookie
Catcher - Dodge, Wrestle
Linemen x3 - rookie
Lineman - Kick
Lineman - +ST, Block
Lineman - Wrestle

3 RR, 1 Apoth, 5 FF

TV: 1380

Next up for me (in roughly forty minutes) I'm facing an Orc team that's ranked 3rd in our league with a record of 3-1-1

Black Orc x2 - Block
Black Orc x2 - rookie
Blitzer x4 - rookie
Thrower - Block
Linemen x2 - rookie

TV: 1140

So he's got three level 2s (all almost level 3... but that's a problem for later). I generally have had trouble with bashy teams that don't make too many mistakes (I'm known in the league for being able to capitalize on people's strengths, but I still feel my offense is rather weak).

Also, he gets 240K in inducements, so I'll probably see a wizard.

I'll let anyone interested in this thread know how it goes in a few hours!

4 catchers already is nice, once you have 2 with blodge then your offence becomes incredicbly easy. Get them both in range with some support, they can only knock down one and they got NOS so the standing one can just run it out of there. That's if you're in a rush which generally isn't a great idea if you have 8 turns to score. Defense is the hard bit with Elves, stalling them/recovering the ball without risking a brawl with av7 players.. That +str block lineman... his ears don't look that pointy to me! ;)

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to getting blodge and wrodge on my catchers.

I just finished the match and it ended 2-1 in my favor. Was a pretty intense match, but limiting his blocks to 1-2 per turn helped a lot on casualties.. in fact, there were only two! And they both came from fouls...

So my +ST lineman just got hit with a -MV (I rerolled from a -AV)... so that kind of sucks, but 5 movement isn't absolutely terrible on a ST4.

I'll recap in a moment (in this post), but I did get two levels in the last match so I'm looking for a bit of advice. Keeping in mind I have three matches left before finals (Dwarves, Dark Elves, Dwarves) and the playoffs look like they'll be myself, Dark Elves, Orcs, and probably Undead (although that spot isn't very secure).

The first to level up was a rookie lineman, so I decided wrestle with him. I figured it would help a little more against the two Dwarf teams than Dodge at this moment.

Next I have a Catcher level up... he didn't roll anything special, so the choices are Block, Dodge, or Wrestle... Dodge will be absolutely more help in the finals, but I've got three games until then to maybe get him that, while Block would make him a better ball carrier. However, Wrestle will help me steal the ball away a lot better if I get the chance.

Wrestle on lino is good facing all that Dwarf block, maybe he can drag one down with him or even blitz a block ball carrier if you wrodge catcher gets taken out. Normally dodge first is best on catchers to see if they get any stats or doubles for second skill before specialising, but against 2 dwarves and with 1 catcher with wrestle already I'd just take block on him. Slightly less useful on defence but much better on offence. Makes him your best receiver/ball carrier like you said. (especially since dodge is basically useless against Dwarves) Make sure you keep feeding your Blitzers spp. Blodge sidestep is a wonderful thing early in development. Helps your defence immensely. And good luck! :)

Ok, I'm definitely leaning toward Block. Hopefully I'll be able to feed my blitzers and the two elves with 5 SPP.

Recap!

The match starts with Orcs deciding to receive. He manages to stun two of my three line elves at the line, but can't really make any progress into my half... so he build a cage.

I knock away the orcs sent to mark my elves, and stay solid. The game progresses with him moving his cage forward and my elves kicking back his orcs with the 2 die blocks I manage to engineer. I manage to knock out a Blitzer AND a Black Orc, and then he positions his cage against the sideline... with some strategic blocks I manage to then knock out another blitzer, and almost hit his ball carrier!

But I forgot to step forward to allow another elf to hit him... so instead I create a net around his cage to lay on the pressure and withdraw my men from a minor skirmish keeping his other blitzers busy on the other side of the field. Well, he gets aggressive and lays his cage right next to my elves, but I manage to take down his corner and blitz his ball carrier with my wrestler!

Then the ball is caught by a catcher who's already moved and in not a great position. I try to get my defenses up a bit more, but it's not looking good for that catcher's safetly.

Sure enough, he gets hit, but the ball falls back next to my elves! So I take a line elf, dodge out of a tackle zone to pick up the ball, then run around his marking players, and throw a perfect throw to a nearby catcher!

Interception by a blitzer! A marked blitzer! What the hell dice!? He takes the opportunity to run that blitzer forward and brutalize my out of position elves (didn't want to risk a reroll on dodges before I had the ball back).

I still manage to dodge out two elves to two die block against the ball carrier and knock it away! I mark the ball, and bring in some more elves to help secure it.

He hits me, but I manage to keep the numbers lead around the ball. I manage to knock away everyone but one orc from the ball, and run a line elf in to pick it up. He succeeds! Now to dodge out and throw it to a nearby catcher at short range... and I roll a one for the dodge.

We tussle a bit over the ball, then he manages to knock my elves away, dodges out of my elf tackle zones, pick up the ball, and make a GFI to score!

It's turn 8, so I just get the ball and toss it with a 5 SPP catcher.

Second half, I'm down 0-1, but I receive. I set up to take make a hole in his LoS, since it's a bit weak, and... Perfect Defense! He gets to rearrange his players to stop my lopsided offense on the right side where he also kicked the ball.

Luck is on my side, however, and the ball rolls to a catcher who scoops it up, I shift my forces to the left side and run some catchers I had on that side to screen the ball carrier.

He tries to stop me, but I manage to score in 2 more turns (was taking time to keep the ball carrier safe, in this time, he fouls my +ST line elf.

His receive, and I kick the ball shallow. Blitz! I manage to move my Wrodger to catch my kick off! I try to bring in support, but the second catcher falls on his ass... so my elf is in enemy territory surrounded by Orcs.

He surrounds the elf, and gets a two die block. Defender Down and Both Down. Well, shit. The Orc coach has a momentary lapse in sanity and chooses Both Down, so we both go down and the ball drops to next to one of the helper orcs... but he already moved. No one else can help because they either moved or aren't in range!

Next turn, I move in my catchers to screen another catcher, I have my Wrodger get up, dodge out of a tackle zone, go into another to pick up the ball, then dodge out to a clean pass to my waiting screened catcher!

He tries his best to stop me (including a second foul to a line elf... which he apologizes for as he does it), but my screen doesn't allow for much help. However, he manages to double team my ball carrier (but he had to use a blitz to do that). Catcher manages to get help for a two die block against the forward defender, blitzes him down, and runs it in for 2-1.

It's turn 13, and his ball... but it doesn't manage to make it far, and I stall his attempts to get further than the LoS.

Overall, a very intense match, but a few key mistakes on his part let me get those two TDs at the end to win it.

No worries. An ag3 Orc intercepts on a 6 in or out of tacklezone btw so that doesn't make any difference to that roll. 1/6 even agi 1 will make that intercept and when it happens can really cost you a game. I've got 1 intercept in 100 games or so online.. so most coaches don't give you the chance of intercepts! Sometimes you have to risk it but always avoid if you can..

Well, that turned into a novel... Sorry about that!

Nah, no worries, longer tales are nice for those times we haven't got the time to play games - at least we can read about them ;)

So, next up is a Dwarf team with nothing to lose. He's lost four men in six game and has a desire to hurt people.

His lineup:
Blitzer - Guard
Blitzer - Rookie
Runner - Block, Kick-Off Return
Troll Slayer - Unknown level up (probably guard)
Troll Slayer - Rookie
Blocker - Guard
Blocker x4 - Rookie

TV: 1090 (+LVL UP, +70K for a journeyman) ~ 1180

Now, due to last game, I'm down to 11 people and feeling very nervous about that.

But I'm not sure I want to buy another player. Even down two people my team has the highest TV in the league at 1350 (+190 for my MNG players) with the second highest team (Dark Elves) at 1300 (+LVL UP).

So, would it be best to hire an extra Lino so I have an extra in case things go wrong? Or perhaps get a second Thrower so I can start building two different types?

I'd be giving him Babes or an Extra Reroll if I bought another elf.

I suppose another option would be to purchase an extra reroll to maybe make my team even more reliable (with a mostly skill-less team, I'm burning through rerolls rather quickly).

Extra bench sounds good he will probably take a bribe if hes in that mood and foul you every turn. Thrower for 10k extra can serve as an extra body to take hits/fouls until he lvls and then he may just become useful. :)

Well, that game was painful. Lost a rookie lineman, and then got two permanent injuries (decided to retire the rookie -AV catcher). Then it ended in a tie, as I was not able to keep a 10 man dwarf team from doing anything with 6 Elves.

I'll recap whenever I'm a little less angry at dice.
