Bretonnian Teams Roster Initial Thoughts
I was surprised to see that the new Season 3 box set was going to come with a Bretonnian team. I, like many others, had thought that the Season 2 introduction of the Imperial Nobility roster meant we weren’t going to see a Bretonnian team.
At first glance they do not appear to be very strong or have a lot going for them. They don’t have any strong players, they don’t have any very agile players, nor any really cheap players. Dauntless will help to a degree against stronger teams, though that can and will fail to work and the team only has two players with primary access to Strength skills to be able to load up on Guard.
They are also average when it comes to ball handling. They are less agile than the Elven teams and don’t start with Sure Hands (though the new Secure the Ball action can help with picking it up). Nerves of Steel is nice to have but it’s not something you want to be relying on. No one starts with Dodge to help alleviate the lack of high agility and it’s a skill you will probably want if you are moving the ball to someone in tackle zones utilising Nerves of Steel. The overall speed of the team is pretty average and they aren’t that great at passing either.
The new Steady Footing skill may be useful and it’s nice to have, though how effective it turns out to be will require some games to be played. Cheap Squires that start with Wrestle is a plus side and they will be capable of dragging opponents to the floor in both yours and your opponents turn. Unfortunately they don’t have access to the new devious skills to effectively foul as well compared to some other teams. The Squires also have low armour so if you’re using them to cover the more expensive Knights you are in danger of losing a war of attrition.
It’s hard to see where this team will excel. I feel it’s going to come down to how effective a lot of Wrestle will be. Overall the team seems pretty average and maybe that’s where their overall performance level will sit. I’m intrigued to see how they get on. If you give them a go then please leave your thought’s in the comments!
