Amazon Starting Rosters Overview

Amazon teams are blessed with affordable players and with Dodge across the board they are hard to knock over for most opponents. Along with cheap rerolls and no expensive Big Guy player to select, your choices are whether to get more players or more rerolls when starting your team. There’s never any reason not to start with all four Blitzers as they are one of the best players in the game. You can also spare the funds to get an Apothecary from the start to hopefully keep those Blitzers safe.

The Throwers and Catchers have had a slight price increase from the previous ruleset which requires a slight tweak to what you can start with.

I’m a big fan of going heavy on rerolls to start teams. The cost of them doubles after team creation and you can use them on every player on your team. Amazon Linewomen are also pretty good with the Throwers and Catchers only really giving you access to Passing or Agility skills respectively. You can use a team reroll to replicate either Pass or Catch and with the new rules you aren’t limited to a single team reroll use per turn. The rerolls also let you reroll all manner of other things so you can be a bit more liberal with them, especially towards the end of a half if you still have a few left. The safety net of the rerolls lets you try more Go For Its/Rushes, reroll less crucial but potentially really useful blocks etc.

You could swap out the Thrower for a Catcher if you prefer, or take an extra Linewoman and then either bank the cash or spend it on some Dedicated Fans.

An alternative would be to start with twelve total players (and the Apothecary) which will give you a deeper bench than most other starting teams. If you know you are going up against quite a few Dwarf and / or Chaos Dwarf teams then this might be the way to go. Whilst most teams will struggle to knock your Dodge heavy players over, those two races have a lot of Tackle and your armour is quite low.

You have 40k left over which you could use on Dedicated Fans, save towards the next player, or upgrade one of the Linewomen to either a Thrower or Catcher. You could also drop either of the rerolls or the Apothecary to get an extra Linewoman. I personally would advise against it as they tend to offer more flexibility than the extra Linewoman typically would.

As mentioned above, I’m don’t think you gain a huge amount taking the Throwers or Catchers over a Linewoman. This is what your lineup would probably look like if you did decide to start with them. It’s rarely going to be worth it to take more than one Thrower at the start, regardless of the team you’re playing with. Catch is more useful than Pass and agility skills on the whole are more useful more often than passing skills.

The above leaves you with eleven players and an Apothecary (which is already a leg up on most teams). You could opt to drop a reroll or the Apothecary if you wanted to get an extra Linewoman. Either bank the excess cash or you can start with an extra Dedicated Fans.

Amazon Starting Rosters Summary

I’ve given the outlines of the main starting options for Amazon teams, there are minor considerations for each, mainly to do with the Thrower or Catchers and it is really down to personal preference. There aren’t really many other teams that can start with a lot of rerolls and in effect twelve or more players. Due to this Amazon teams are probably one of the most straight forward and easy teams when it comes to deciding what you want to start with.
